FINMA Releases the Insurance Market Report 2016

    September 05, 2017

FINMA published its annual report offering an overview of the Swiss insurance market in 2016. In addition to presenting general information on the insurance market in Switzerland, the report sets out balance sheet and profit and loss data for the industry as a whole. Aggregated data on balance sheets, income statements, and the Swiss Solvency Test (SST) contain only the values for solo insurance companies subject to FINMA supervision.

The report also presents data on tied assets and premiums, including figures for FINMA-supervised Swiss branches of foreign insurance companies and general health insurance companies in the supplementary health insurance sector. The report sets out information about the total market—that is, life insurance, non-life insurance, and reinsurance sectors. The figures for the individual lines of business show the trends in premiums, market shares of major companies active on the Swiss market, and the development of equity and net annual earnings. For life insurance, the report also covers actuarial and technical results. All supervised insurers are required to submit information and data to FINMA on the previous year’s business trends. FINMA then draws up an overview of the industry, which it includes in its annual report on the insurance market.
