ESMA Holds Conference on the State of European Financial Markets

    October 17, 2017

ESMA hosted its first conference on the State of European Financial Markets in Paris. Over 350 participants from across the European financial sector, including political decision makers, regulators, consumer and industry representatives, and financial media discussed the key issues facing capital and securities markets in Europe.

The keynote speakers included Xavier Rolet, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the London Stock Exchange (LSE); Roberto Gualtieri MEP, the ECON Committee Chair; and Ashley Alder, the IOSCO Chairman, who will provided the closing remarks. The panel discussions, keynote remarks and interactions among supervisors and financial industry professionals during the conference offered an opportunity to discuss the state of European financial markets in the context of ESMA’s mission and how best to safeguard the stability of the EU financial system in the coming years.

The ESMA Chair Steven Maijoor spoke about the challenges facing European financial markets. He focused on building a Capital Markets Union, especially by protecting retail investors; a strong convergent European supervisory culture, including Brexit; and improving the understanding of trends, risks, and vulnerabilities in financial markets. Additionally, the EC Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis delivered the keynote address, kicking off a packed agenda in the form of four panel debates, which offered a unique forum to address issues critical to European capital markets. Topics included Trading and Market Infrastructures; Brexit; Investors and Innovation; and the Regulatory Agenda Post-2017.
